Buildings in the countryside

Driving in Germany is always a surprise of new cultural ideas and historical buildings. The buildings go way back and include Roman ruins and old castles. The two castles in Manderscheid belonged to two different princes. They didn't like each other and built these castles right on the edge of each other's land and then spent years shooting back and forth at each other.

A lot of the buildings in Germany have beautiful woodwork and decorations. If you look carefully you can see dragonheads carved on the bottom supports of the decorations around the upper window.

Even the newer villages are sometimes hundreds of years old. The fountains are beautiful and the courtyards are often surrounded by old houses and farm buildings.

Even though there are many cool new surprises every village is sure to have at least one church. Sometimes they are very old and sometimes they are newer but there is always a church in every village.

During World War II Patten's tanks went through Dudeldorf and amazingly enough this building survived and on the sides of this building are scrape marks from the tanks.  And yes that is a main road that you go through - definitely one car at a time.

When you drive in the country there are some amazing buildings and sites to see.  There was a wall on one side of the road and stairs that went up to the top of the wall.
