Bernhardfest

September and October are fair season in Germany. Every little berg and village and of course every big city has their fair or as the Germans call them "Das Fest". They are like town parties, county fairs, and craft shows rolled together. Heinrich went to the Bernhardfest at the Himmerod Abbey founded by Bernard de Clairvaux.

There were lots of booths that sold crafts and books and foods. The foods included smoked fish, grilled wild boar, and german breads.

A local brass band played German tunes up on the hill. It was interesting how many of the German songs sounded very familiar.

There was also a blacksmith demonstration and an owl trainer. Like falconeer but with an owl instead.

Next to the abbey was a nice restaurant with a porchside dining area. The day was beautiful and Heinrich really indulged in a very nice German meal. He had schweineschnitzel (pork schnitzel) with fries and a beautiful salad. He also had a house specialty, Himmeroder Klosterhacksteak (sausage steak) with fried onions and fried potatoes. They were really delicious.  Check out that scenery.

Now poor Heinrich has to do a lot of exercise to work off all those delicious calories. Maybe next time he should only have one plate of food.
