No Burger Bar - McDonalds instead

When Heinrich first got to Germany, he did not have a house yet so he stayed in a base hotel. That means he had to find some other places to eat. He was really excited when he found the parking lot for Burger Bar. (For those who do not know Burger Bar is a family favorite fast food place we always went to when visiting Utah) Nothing like a Big Ben to fill up a hungry little Bear. Unfortunately the Burger Bar was part of a base in Bitburg that had closed down, so no extra large milk shakes today.

Instead he ended up eating at a local McDonalds. It was like McDonalds in America but the words were all written in German. It made ordering a little more exciting than usual. The cookies looked good but Heinrich went with a chicken sandwich and french fries. (He also was warm so he went with his shorts today.)

After Heinrich ordered his french fries he was a little surprised when the fries came with a little wooden stick with two pointing tips on one end.

After looking around the restaurant he noticed that everyone else was using the stick like a small fork. It seems that in Germany people think that its odd to eat their french fries with their fingers so every one uses the little stick to eat their fries.

That's not the only new thing Heinrich learned about eating German french fries. (I know that sounds strange but the French don't even call french fries french - they call them Belgium fries). Anyway Germans use mayonnaise preferentially but do offer ketchup as a help to Americans.   I think Heinrich will need to introduce the Germans to Fry Sauce - the best of both countries.  So Heinrich ate his fries with a stick and mayonnaise.

  3. The sticks are fun, and we will get you one. The mayo was ok, it needs to be mixed with ketchup. I'll do that next time and then we will see how long it takes the Germans to catch onto fry sauce.

And Becky, they don't really eat many things with their fingers.
Even pizza they put in a wrapper to eat it or use a fork. Brats and hamburgers are put in a wrapper etc so you hold it with that. Although I think they did eat the hamburgers at McD's without a wrapper.
