Himmerod Abbey

Heinrich visited an old abbey that was founded by a famous monk named Bernard de Clairvoux. An abbey is a place where religious people live in a community and raise most of their own food.

There were beautiful gardens and some very nice religious statues on the grounds. As Heinrich wandered around he found a sign that said, "Bienenlehrpfad" which mean Bee learning path. Along the path Heinrich found an old style coil beehive and some jars of honey that were for sale.

Further down the path he found a tall narrow little house that was set up a display. At the opening of the bottom were lots of bees flying in and out. This was very interesting for Heinrich because where there are bees there is usually honey and you know how much bears like honey. When he carefully opened up the sides of the display house he found a really cool bee colony. There was a chart to explain how the beehive worked and there were clear plastic sheets so that Heinrich could see the bees working and the honeycombs they were making. It made it safe to watch but the plastic kept Heinrich from getting the honey. Oh well, it was still fun to learn about bees and honey.
